Small Talk [100 WORD STORY]

This week’s challenge is based on this intriguing picture. I’m unsure how to interpret the piece, but a definite sense of loneliness in this orderly city exists. What the characters are communicating are, to me, ambiguous –but their ambitions and emotions feel explicit.

It’s rather curious, too, in a simple way; what are these figures doing in the dead of the night? What keeps them awake? Expressing this in 100 words is definitely a challenge, but somehow suiting.

Anyway, the painting in itself is absolutely beautiful –apparently quite renowned, too. Beautiful title: Nighthawks, by Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967).

A penny for your thoughts?

Whisked on an avalanche of despair and unrelenting bitterness, the silent night roars. Their footsteps engrave into the immaculate, dimly lit alleyways . Three souls –dark clouds hovering above their heads– sit in close proximity. However, their thoughts lead them astray. They leave elongated shadows in their chairs, an insufficient substitute for their existence.

Demons arise with wicked intentions; every mistake, regret and bruise rekindles within their tormented conscience.

In this lonely city, a bittersweet scene unfolds.

It begins with an unconvincing, It’s a fine night.

And ends with an, Isn’t it?

Empty smiles paint their lips.

  1. I love this. So clever how you use words to paint the imagery in your work. I particularly like –
‘Three souls –dark clouds hovering above their heads– sit in close proximity. ‘

Sums up the painting so well.

Leave a comment! They make my day. ♥
